Taking payments
How to take booking deposits, invoice payments and shop orders by card through your own Stripe account, and how refunds work.
Connect Stripe
Card payments go to your own Stripe account. Your business is the seller, and Stripe pays the money out to your bank.
- Open Settings › Payments. Only the account owner sees it.
- Press Connect Stripe.
- Stripe asks for your identity and bank details on its own pages. Mainmark never sees them.
- When you come back, the page says Ready to take payments.
If it says Not finished or Paused by Stripe, press Continue with Stripe to see what Stripe still needs. Open Stripe dashboard takes you to your account.
Fees: Stripe's card fees, plus 1% to Mainmark. Mainmark's fee is taken from each payment when it is made; Stripe charges its own fees separately.
Card payments on invoices and shop orders need a plan. See pricing.
Booking deposits
Each service can take money when it is booked. Open Settings › Booking, edit a service, and under Paid when booking choose one of these:
- Nothing, pay at the appointment
- A deposit
- The full price
The customer pays on Stripe's page when they book. Their time is held for 30 minutes, and the appointment is booked once the payment arrives. Unpaid times are released.
Add a refund policy in Settings › Payments. Customers see it before they pay.
Invoices
Once Stripe is ready, an invoice you send gets a Pay by card button on the customer's invoice page. When they pay, the invoice is marked paid.
For cash, cheque or a transfer, open the invoice and use Mark paid.
Shop orders
When you press Accept and request payment on an order, the customer is told how to pay. They can pay with the details you set in Settings › Shop, such as an Interac e-Transfer, or, once Stripe is ready, with Pay by card on their order page.
A card payment marks the order paid. For an e-Transfer, press Mark paid when the money arrives.
Refunds
- Bookings: in Appointments, open the appointment's menu and choose Refund. The full amount goes back to the customer's card, and it cannot be undone.
- Shop orders: on the order page, use the Refund panel. You can refund part or all of what was paid.
- Invoices: refund in your Stripe dashboard. Mainmark records the refund, and the invoice stays paid.
Only the owner can refund a payment. Cancelling an appointment does not refund it. A declined paid request, or a paid time that someone else took first, is refunded automatically.
When you refund a payment in full through Mainmark, Mainmark's fee on it is refunded too. Stripe's own fees follow Stripe's terms.
What Stripe is told
Stripe is told the amount, the customer's email when they gave one, Mainmark's own reference numbers, and only the kind of payment: Appointment deposit, Appointment, Invoice payment or Order payment. It is never told the service booked or the items bought.
Customers enter their card on Stripe's page, so Mainmark never sees their card details. Disputes and chargebacks are handled in your Stripe dashboard.
Payments show in Analytics as revenue, by where each customer came from. See analytics.
