Editing your website
How to change words, sections, pages, photos and colours, then save, publish, and go back to an earlier version.
The editor
Open Website and press Edit website.
On the left are Outline, Add, Pages and Menus. In the middle is the page as visitors see it, with buttons to view it at desktop, tablet or mobile width. On the right are Fields and Design. Choose which page to edit from the list at the top.
Click a section on the page, or in Outline, and its words, links and pictures open under Fields. Some text, such as headings, can also be typed straight on the page.
Your phone number, email, address and hours come from your business details, so every page agrees. Change them under Settings, in Business details.
Undo and redo are at the top, or press Ctrl Z (⌘ Z on a Mac). When a page needs attention, such as a picture with no description, a warning with a number appears at the top. Open it to see each page check.
Sections, pages and menus
- Add a section: open Add, find one by name or group, and click it. It goes in after the selected section, or at the end of the page.
- Move, copy or remove a section: open Outline and use the menu beside it for Move up, Move down, Duplicate or Remove. You can also drag it by its handle.
- Change how a section looks: many sections have a Style choice under Fields.
The header and footer are shared by every page. A page has one main heading, so the section that holds it cannot be duplicated.
- Open Pages and press Add page.
- Choose A page, or A landing page, for one offer or ad.
- Type the page title. For an ordinary page, leave Add it to the header and footer menus ticked.
- Press Add.
Press Edit beside a page to rename it, make it a landing page or remove it. The home page cannot be removed. Open Menus to change the Header menu and the Footer menu.
Photos, logo and style
Select a section with a picture. Under Fields, press Choose photo (Replace photo when there is one) to pick a stock photograph, or Upload photo to use your own. Use stock for supporting pictures, and upload photographs of your real staff, premises and work.
Upload a JPEG or PNG of up to 20 MB. Open Description and crop to describe the picture for people who cannot see it. Where a section takes a video, press Upload video; it must be an MP4 of up to 50 MB.
Open Design for the rest. Logo and browser icon holds your logo and the small square image shown in browser tabs. Style holds:
- Colours: pick a square, or type your own colour as a hex code. Mainmark makes the other colours from it.
- Colour mode: Light, Dark, or Auto to match the visitor's device.
- Radius, Density, Motion and Contrast: how round the corners are, how much space there is, how much moves, and how strong the contrast is.
A choice that would make text hard to read is refused, and the editor says why.
Save draft and Publish changes
Your edits stay in your browser until you press Save draft. Until then the top of the editor says Unsaved changes, and leaving asks you first.
Saving does not change your website. When the draft is saved, press Publish changes to send it to your website. When it is done, View preview or View site opens the new version.
If a version cannot be published, for example because example text is still on a page, the editor says why and your website stays as it was.
If someone else saved the website while you were editing, the editor says it was edited elsewhere. Reload to keep editing.
Go back to an earlier version
Open Website, then the History tab. It lists each version that went live, when, what changed and who published it. A publish that failed shows its reason here.
Press Restore beside an earlier version. Your website goes back to that version, and so does the editor. Older versions say Restore unavailable.
Pages Mainmark can add
Once your website is written, the Website page may show Add pages. These are pages and home page sections Mainmark can write from what you already told it, which your website does not have yet.
Press Add beside one. It goes into your draft, so open the editor to review it, then press Publish changes.
